DESCRIPTION:
We were asked to renovate a lobby and elevator cab for a new gallery space on the Bowery. In our research, we discovered the Bowery used to be a road made of end grain blocks, and that raised blocks were used at intervals as guides. In order to get to the elevator and up to the gallery, you must travel down a corridor and around a corner. The idea of using raised wood blocks as a way finding tool intrigued us.
Using salvaged end grain wood, we created a wall system panels that vary in heights as they encapsulate the elevator cab.
